Biogeography of Iberian Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

چکیده

Ants are highly diverse in the Iberian Peninsula (IP), both species richness (299 cited species) and number of endemic (72). The ant fauna is one richest broader Mediterranean region, it similar to Balkan but lower than Greece or Israel, when controlled by surface area. In this first general study on biogeography ants, we propose seven chorological categories for grouping thems. Moreover, also eight biogeographic refugium areas, based criteria “refugia-within-refugium” IP. We analysed richness, occurrence endemism all these which found be significantly different as far similarity was concerned. Finally, collected published evidence biological traits, molecular phylogenies, fossil deposits geological processes able infer most probable centre origin dispersal routes followed noteworthy ants As a result, have divided myrmecofauna into four biogeographical groups: relict, Asian-IP disjunct, Baetic-Rifan Alpine. To sum up, our results support being significant factor determining current structure communities, especially very complex heterogenous taxonomic diversity distribution patterns describe highlight utility understanding evolutionary history Peninsula.

Common names for Australian ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Most insects do not have common names, and this is a significant barrier to public interest in them, and to their study by non-specialists. This holds for even highly familiar insect groups such as ants. Here, I propose common names for all major native Australian ant genera and species-groups, as well as for many of the most abundant and distinctive species. Sixty-two genera, 142 species-group...

Ants of the Florida Keys: Species Accounts, Biogeography, and Conservation (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

As a tropical archipelago, the Florida Keys provide an ideal environment to examine the historic and short-term processes that structure and influence biological diversity. Through a new survey of the ants of the Florida Keys, we increase our knowledge of the number of species to 94 representing 34 genera and 8 subfamilies. Through detailed collection information, we provide an in depth picture...

Molecular phylogeny and biogeography of the spider ants, genus Leptomyrmex Mayr (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

This study provides the first phylogenetic reconstruction of the ant genus Leptomyrmex Mayr, a prominent endemic component of rain forest and wet sclerophyll forest in Australia, New Guinea and New Caledonia. Five genes are used to reconstruct phylogeny and estimate of ages of diversification in order to test congruence of the history of nuclear and mitochondrial genes: three protein-coding nuc...

A preliminary checklist of the ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) of Andorra

Within the last decade, checklists of the ant fauna of several European countries have been published or updated. Nevertheless, no ant checklists have hitherto been published for the principality of Andorra, a small landlocked country located in the eastern part of the Pyrenees. This work presents a critical list of the ant species of Andorra based on a review of the literature and on the biolo...
